Community parks, green and blue spaces for people and wildlife

Speke Garston Coastal Reserve sits next to Liverpool International Business Park, on the banks of the River Mersey.  It has been transformed into a coastal reserve as part of Peel’s work to support the local community and Liverpool Sailing Club following years of decline and increasing vandalism in the area. The coastal reserve is now hugely popular with walkers, cyclists, bird spotters and plane enthusiasts.

The reserve was created in Partnership with Liverpool City Council and the Speke Garston Partnership which oversaw the transformation of this area into precious natural habitat.  The reserve comprises 70 acres of land stretching from Garston Docks to Liverpool John Lennon Airport on the banks of the Mersey Estuary. With panoramic views across the estuary, the reserve forms part of the circular coastal walk which is rich in wildlife including many wading birds such as redshanks, dunlins and curlews.

Volunteers from Peel L&P and other local partner organisations including South Liverpool Homes, Liverpool City Council, National Trust and Liverpool Sailing Club have undertaken regular shoreline clean ups. In 2019, the event was organised by South Liverpool Homes as part of a national ‘Great Plastic Pick Up’ campaign, part of a Keep Britain Tidy campaign.
